But which company you choose is the least important decision you will make. What the outcomes research points to is the fitting: how the device was programmed, whether it was verified in your ear with real ear measures, and whether anyone followed up while your brain adapted. The best hearing aid in the world is useless if it is not fit correctly.

Do I need to research brands before my appointment?

You do not need to arrive with a shortlist. Coming in with a clear picture of your hardest listening situations — the restaurant, the grandchildren, the television at night — is more useful than brand research. Your audiologist will narrow the manufacturer options from your audiogram and your listening life, then discuss the differences that are actually relevant to your case.

Can Resonate service hearing aids I bought somewhere else?

It depends on the manufacturer. Open-platform brands — including Rexton, Bernafon, Philips, Sennheiser, and Jabra — can be fully reprogrammed, verified with real ear measures, cleaned, and repaired. Proprietary retail brands like Miracle-Ear, Beltone, and Audibel are locked so that only their own stores can adjust the settings; we can clean and verify those, but reprogram them we cannot. Is one brand better than the others?

Not in any absolute sense. Each of the six major manufacturers produces genuinely good hearing aids, and each has a processing approach that suits certain patients better than others. The question is which one fits your hearing loss, your listening situations, and your daily life — and that answer is different for different people.

What are real ear measures, and why do they matter?

Real ear measures use a small probe microphone placed near your eardrum to measure what sound is actually being delivered at that point — as opposed to what the manufacturer's specification sheet predicts. Every ear canal is shaped differently, and the acoustics change the amplification meaningfully. Verifying the fitting against a prescriptive target in your ear is the difference between knowing the hearing aids are performing correctly and assuming they are.
